Konflikt mezi Izraelem a Íránem zasahuje i do internetových komunikátorů. Írán prostřednictvím státní televize v úterním vysílání nařídil svým obyvatelům, aby WhatsApp smazali.

Důvodem je prý obava o bezpečnost kvůli obavám, že platforma pro zasílání zpráv shromažďuje uživatelské informace, které by sdílela s Izraelem. Vláda měla obyvatele vyzvat, aby nepoužívali ani jiné aplikace, které získávají jejich polohu.

Írán zakázal WhatsApp již v roce 2022 kvůli tehdejším protestům (v minulosti to udělal již vícekrát), ale loni jej opět povolil. V Íránu nyní nastávají celostátní výpadky internetu, které jsou však spíše snahou zamezit dalším útokům od Izraele. V zemi je řada aplikací zakázána, včetně sítě X, Instagramu či Telegramu. Místní to ale obcházejí přes VPN.

Meta na obvinění reagovala. Mluvčí WhatsAppu sdělil, že platforma pro zasílání zpráv, kterou vlastní Meta, je znepokojena zprávami z íránské státní televize. WhatsApp tvrdí, že jeho šifrování neumožňuje nikomu, ani zaměstnancům Mety, přístup ke zprávám.

Meta však již dříve vyhrála spor s izraelskou firmou NSO, která vyvinula a použila software Pegasus na proniknutí do platformy WhatsApp v roce 2019. Pokuta za to činila 167 milionů dolarů.

Nesledujeme vaši přesnou polohu, neuchováváme záznamy o tom, kdo si kdo píše, a nesledujeme osobní zprávy, které si lidé navzájem posílají. Neposkytujeme hromadné informace žádné vládě.“
