Po sedmi letech jsme se dočkali první velké aktualizace Gmailu. Poštovní službu Googlu využívá skoro 1,5 miliardy lidí, ti všichni mohli od dubna vyzkoušet novou verzi, která přináší lehký redesign a několik nových funkcí.

Gmail umí nově pracovat s úkoly, zobrazí přílohy i bez otevření zprávy, dokáže odložit e-mail na později, nabízí chytré odpovědi vytvořené díky umělé inteligenci (to v češtině zatím chybí), progresivní webovou aplikaci s offline režimem, připomenutí odpovědí a po vzoru ProtonMailu podporuje i tzv. důvěrný režim. Gmail zašifruje zprávu, takže ji bude moci přečíst jen ten, kdo zná heslo. Odesílatel zároveň může nastavit časovou platnost, po nastavené době se zpráva na obou stranách odstraní.

Uživatele bezplatného Gmailu Google upozorňuje, že k přepnutí na novou verzi dojde již brzy, avšak zatím bude možné vrátit se zpět. Na blogu určeném pro placené účty v rámci G Suite je již přesný harmonogram (který na 99 % bude platit i pro bezplatný Gmail). Google uživatele automaticky převede na novou verzi k 18. září 2018, ale dočasně budou moci ručně aktivovat starou verzi. Od 16. října ale stará verze zmizí a všichni budou mít tu novou.
