Satelitní internet Elona Muska dosáhne globálního pokrytí už v září tohoto roku. Starlink má nyní na nízké oběžné dráze okolo 1800 satelitů a celkem jich má být v provozu 12 tisíc. Už současný počet ale téměř stačí na pokrytí celé planety.

Září ale nebude termínem, kdy si bude moci každý zájemce objednat od Elona satelitní internet. Starlink totiž musí ještě získat povolení od místních regulátorů v zemích, kde hodlá službu nabízet. Společnost Starlink patří SpaceX a vede ji Gwynne Shotwel, která zde pracuje již téměř dvacet let.

Starlink již několik měsíců nabízí připojení v některých lokalitách v rámci programu „Better than nothing Beta“ a prozatím získat deset tisíc zákazníků. Má už ale na půl milionu předobjednávek. Měsíční poplatek činí 99 dolarů a zaplatit je potřeba ještě vstupní poplatek 499 dolarů. V ceně je uživatelský terminál a Wi-Fi router.

Uživatel se se svým zařízením nepřipojuje přímo na satelit (jako tomu bylo třeba v případě sítě Iridium s obřími anténami u satelitních telefonů), ale pomocí paraboly a terminálu si vytvoří lokální síť Wi-Fi (nebo ethernet).

Služby nabízí nebo bude nabízet kromě Spojených států v těchto zemích: UK, Kanada, Rakousko, Austrálie, Argentina, Brazílie, Francie, Chile, Kolombie, Německo, Řecko, Irsko, Itálie, Mexiko, Nizozemí, Nový Zéland, Filipíny, JAR a Španělsko. Současná rychlost dosahuje až k 200/30 Mb/s , přičemž uživatelé hlásí latenci 20 až 45 ms. S přibývajícím počtem satelitů by se měly tyto parametry zlepšovat.

Satelity na orbit vynáší rakety Falcon 9 po desítkách a vypouští je jako vláčky. Doposud proběhlo 29 startů (Falcon 9 je schopný opakovaně přistávat a opět startovat) a každá raketa nesla většinou 60 satelitů. Jejich cílová orbitální výška je okolo 550 km (původně byla plánovaná dvojnásobná výška) nad zemským povrchem. Pro porovnání – Mezinárodní vesmírná stanice ISS létá ve výšce 400 km, oproti tomu družice GPS a dalších geolokačních systémů zase až ve 20 tisících km.

Podle SpaceX přesáhnou náklady na vybudování celé sítě 10 miliard dolarů, ale budoucí zisk by měl výrazně převyšovat. Někteří astronomové si ale již stěžují na světelné znečištění a zhoršené podmínky pro sledování hvězd. Ani konkurence nespí a třeba Amazon plánuje podobný projekt pod názvem Kuiper. Naopak Google svůj internet Loon šířený pomocí stratosférických balónů již vzdal.
